From 3rd to 4th October 2018, the 5th Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology for Young Researchers was held at Nuclear Training Center (NTC), Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM), 140 Nguyen Tuan Street, Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi. The conference was organized by VINATOM in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of the Institute to discuss and exchange research findings carried out by young researchers since the 4th conference, and then identify the direction of scientific research for them in the coming time.
This conference honourably welcomed over 140 participants, including Mr. Tran Xuan Bach, Deputy Secretary of Youth Union of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST); Mr. Nguyen Hung Thanh, Planning and Finance Department, MOST; Dr. Tran Ngoc Toan and Dr. NGUYEN Hao Quang, Vice – Presidents of VINATOM; together with leaders and young researchers from the organizations under VINATOM, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Natural Science of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Thai Nguyen University of Education, Thai Nguyen Central General Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital, Central Military Hospital 108, Agricultural Genetics Institute, Institute of Physics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Tran Ngoc Toan said that Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology for Young Researchers was held every two years, which is an important event in research, development and application of atomic energy field. Following the success of 4 previous conferences, the 5th one aimed to further strengthen research, implementation and application, and simultaneously, determine the research orientation, objectives and topics needed for the next phase, contributing to enhance the capability of young researchers in the field of atomic energy.

After a rigorous review process by the Scientific Council, 63 reports were shortlisted, of which 38 were oral presentations and 21 were posters.

On the first day, at Plenary Session, 4 presentations were made by guest speakers who are currently scientists from prestigious research institutes under MOST and universities. The presentations consisted of “Young Entrepreneurs Start-Up in 4.0 Industry” by Mr. Le Vu Toan, Academy of Science, Technology and Innovation; “Overview of Intellectual Property Right” by Hoang Anh, National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam; “Activity Concentrations of 210Pb in the Aerosol in Hanoi” by MSc. Duong Duc Thang, Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (INST); “Research on preparation of Fish Gelatin Hydrogel by Electron Beam Irradiation to Apply as Bio Material” by Nguyen Thanh Duoc, Research and Development Center for Radiation Technology.
After the plenary session, the participants were divided into two specific sessions.
- Session A: 26 reports (19 oral presentations and 6 posters, including 6 English written reports) on nuclear energy and safety, nuclear physics, radiation measurement, accelerator techniques and nuclear materials.
- Session B: 33 reports (19 oral presentations and 14 posters) on application of nuclear techniques in socio-economy.

At the closing session, the heads of two sessions A & B – Assoc.Prof. Pham Duc Khue, Vice-President of INST and Dr. Tran Minh Quynh, Vice-Director of Hanoi Irradiation Center gave positive comments on the quality and practicality of this year reports showing the significant roles of research and development of atomic energy in socio-economy. Some impressive reports included “Comparison and Evaluation Treatment Planning of Stereotactic Radiation Therapy to Brain Tumours and Brain Metastases on Cyber knife and Truebeam STX”, “A Design of Irradiation Channel for Silicon Transmutation Doping Experiment at the Dalat Research Reactor”, “Self-Shielding, Multiple Scattering and Radiative Capture Corrections for Neutron Cross-Sections Using MCNP Simulation Program”, “Predicting Behaviour of AP-1000 Nuclear Reactor Fuel Rod under Steady State Operating Condition by Using Frapcom-4.0 Software”, etc.
In addition to attending two sessions, the participants were invited to take part in the site tour to NTC and Non-Destructive Evaluation Centre for further information. After two productive working days, 17 prizes (4 prizes A, 5 prizes B, 8 prizes C) were awarded to the excellent presenters. This event has made contribution in strongly encouraging the young researchers to continue devoting themselves to research and development of atomic energy for peaceful purposes in Vietnam.
